The third annual NE Ride is happening on Saturday, June 14th! We at the Northeast CDC are excited to be organizing the ride again, and we hope that this year’s ride will be even bigger and better than last year! Registration is open RIGHT NOW and we are still currently looking for volunteers and sponsors.

For more information about the 2014 NE Ride, please check out our website: northeastride.org

We’re also on Facebook and Twitter.

Please join us and RIDE NORTHEAST!

The Northeast Ride 2013!

The NE Ride, Minneapolis, 2012

The NE Ride, Minneapolis, 2012

For all of you who need a little something fun to look forward to during this frigid winter weather, we have some exciting news.

The Northeast Ride is June 22, 2013!

Last year was a great success and we had a large turnout of participants. Lots of people took part in the bike ride and activities at the various stops and the after-party that was held at Altered Esthetics in the Q.arma Building. So please, mark your calendars and join us again in June for the ride! And watch this site for more information on the event as it gets closer to June.

Summer Updates from the Northeast CDC

I love Northeast!

All of a sudden, summer has arrived! And with it, lots of fun & updates for you from the Northeast CDC.

Northeast Ride

Our first annual Northeast Ride was a smashing success, with over 250 registered riders touring through Northeast. Many thanks to the 50+ volunteers that helped register riders, facilitate the stops, and plan this event. I also want to sincerely thank the ride sponsors (over 40 different businesses and organizations!) You helped make this inaugural ride an incredible showcase for the Northeast community. I know it takes a certain degree of risk to support a first-time event, and we’re so grateful you saw the potential and helped make this vision come to fruition. Thank you!

The ride also got lots of great press, and if you missed the ride or want a recap, you can view a great video of the ride here on the Twin Cities Daily Planet.

Northeast Calendar

Speaking of new projects, the 2012 Northeast Calendar has been a big hit, and our plan is to make the 2013 Calendar even better. In fact, we are excited to announce that artwork submissions are now being accepted! A few key things to note about next year’s edition: The calendar will be larger – 14 months instead of 12. This way, each Northeast Neighborhood has their very own page in the calendar. Oh… and did we mention there’s now a 14th Northeast neighborhood??? That’s right – we’re excited to welcome Mid-City Industrial as a now-official Northeast neighborhood! Mid-City Industrial became an official neighborhood last year, and we’re excited to welcome them to the calendar too.  Are you interested in participating in the Calendar project as either an artist or a sponsor (or both?) You can find out more both about artwork submission and sponsorship at: calendar.northeastcdc.org.

Northeast Minneapolis Arts District

On April 12, along with the Northeast Chamber and Clay Squared to Infinity, we hosted the first of several “State of the Arts Districts” forums. We had a dialogue with community members and artists about opportunities for marketing and how to bring guests to the Arts District. We also discussed how to leverage the brand of the district to bring people to the area. Speaking of branding: we also updated the Arts District website with a shiny new updated, mobile-friendly, share-able version! You can check it out at:  northeastminneapolisartsdistrict.com

Jackson Street Artist Housing

In other news, things are moving along well with JacFlats. The Minnesota Housing Board supported full funding of our supplemental LIHTC request for JacFlats, which secures the current credit need for the project. In other words: things are looking promising as we work with our partners at Artspace for a summer closing! Our continued thanks goes to Artspace for their partnership on this project, and their leadership in making this community vision a reality.

Plant Swap

While updates and emails are great, we’d love to see you in person, too! Next week we’ll be at the Northeast Farmers Market nonprofit booth hosting a plant swap. Swap or donate anything related to plants: seedlings, splits, seeds, containers, indoor plants, gardening tools, books, and other supplies. We’ll be there Saturday June 16 from 9am-1pm. For more information, please visit: northeastcdc.org/?p=225.

It’s an exciting and busy time at the Northeast CDC as we launch new programs and meet the needs of the ever-evolving and ever-vibrant Northeast community. I encourage you to get involved with one of our projects as either a board member, volunteer or participant – we’re making great things happen! If you’d like to join our team or get more information on options, stop by the Farmers Market next week, give us a call at (612) 627-9366 or send us an email at: [email protected]

We look forward to serving Northeast Minneapolis together with you.

Sincerely,

Jamie Schumacher
Executive Director

Winter Updates from the Northeast CDC

Happy February everybody. Is it just me, or is this year speeding by incredibly quickly? We’ve been busy at the Northeast CDC making preparations for 2012, so here’s a little update for you on what we’ve got cooking.

Small Business Services

Last year we started offering additional services, and have been working with Northeast small businesses in a variety of capacities. We helped create websites for Donna Sanders’ consulting business, the Northeast Farmer’s Market, and Sadia’s Hot Sauce. We’ve also offered our financial planning and fiscal agency services to a few startup projects, and are excited to watch those move forward. You can check out our website work at:

Northeast Ride

We’ve been working hard on coordinating partnerships and sponsorships to make the inaugural Northeast Ride a great event. We are pleased to announce the addition of Amber Collett to our planning team! Amber has signed on as the Northeast CDC’s Event Specialist and her work over the past month has been instrumental.

The Northeast Ride will be on June 2, 2012. Starting at the Northeast Armory, the ride will take cyclists on a creative tour through the Northeast Neighborhoods, stopping for creative activities in each of the neighborhood parks. The route has been drafted and we’re working on activities for the individual parks, a post-ride expo, and a post-ride celebration. If you’d like to volunteer for helping out with the ride, or are interested in joining our planning committee, email [email protected]

Oh – and if you’re interested in registering or sponsoring, check out the ride site for info:  northeastride.org

Arts Action Plan

For the past few years we’ve been helping forward the Arts Action Plan. We’ve been meeting regularly with the board of the Northeast Minneapolis Chamber and the Northeast Minneapolis Arts Association to collaborate on projects. This is the first time in history all three organizations have directors working to benefit Northeast! We’re excited and hope that our mutual, aligned efforts are able to push forward progress that helps both businesses and residents in the area. As part of the CDC’s work, we’ve taken over updating the Northeast Minneapolis Arts District website. If you’re looking for something to do in the area – check out the regularly updated calendar of events. We’ll be making a larger site update later in the year.

Oh, and if you haven’t already… like us on facebook! 🙂 Our next Arts District Meeting is Tuesday February 21, 5:30pm at Altered Esthetics. Check us out at:

Jackson Street Artist Housing

Finally… I’ve really saved the best news for last. Our partnership with Artspace on the Jac Flats housing project has been going well. We had a meeting at the end of last year with Logan Park Neighborhood Association to talk about long term planning, building design, and our tax credits application process.

We also recently received some fantastic news from the city.  The project has been recommended by the City’s Community Development Committee to receive additional tax credits and trust fund from the City of Minneapolis. With these funds, our recent application submitted to the State of Minnesota will require only a small amount of additional tax credits – a fact that makes us competitive and hopeful that we will be be awarded final credits in April. If all goes well, we will have a shot at getting Jac Flats under construction by the end of the year!

In Closing…

Thank you, thank you, thank you for your continued support. The past two years for the organization have marked a big transition, as we reshape our services to reflect the changing needs of the Northeast Community. We’re coming out of the change stronger and even more excited – not just about our own future, but about how we’re helping shape a vibrant, stronger Northeast!

All the best,
Jamie Schumacher

PS. We currently have two vacancies on our board. Are you passionate about Northeast, and interested in helping support our organization through this exciting time?  email [email protected] for an application or to learn more. We’d love to have you!

Jackson Street Artist housing in the news!

Great news on Monday as the City of Minneapolis approved site plans for our longstanding Jackson Street Artist Housing project. There were some good articles to follow up the milestone

Jackson Flats, a long-planned artists’ housing project in northeast Minneapolis, is getting a major boost.

The Minneapolis Planning Commission gave the thumbs-up Monday for the project’s site plan and some variances to front-yard and parking lot requirements. A conditional permit was also approved. Developers say these moves will help in their pursuit of funding the unique, four-story structure.

Formally known as Jackson Flats, nicknamed JAC Flats, the long-awaited artist live/work space planned for 18-1/2 Avenue and Jackson Street NE, got another boost from the City of Minneapolis and the federal government last week, but not quite enough to “get in the ground,” according to Greg Handberg, properties senior vice president for Artspace. It will take one more round of the help, which comes in the form of Low Income Housing Tax Credits, to start building, and that’s not expected until next year.
