Happy February everybody. Is it just me, or is this year speeding by incredibly quickly? We’ve been busy at the Northeast CDC making preparations for 2012, so here’s a little update for you on what we’ve got cooking.
Small Business Services
Last year we started offering additional services, and have been working with Northeast small businesses in a variety of capacities. We helped create websites for Donna Sanders’ consulting business, the Northeast Farmer’s Market, and Sadia’s Hot Sauce. We’ve also offered our financial planning and fiscal agency services to a few startup projects, and are excited to watch those move forward. You can check out our website work at:
We’ve been working hard on coordinating partnerships and sponsorships to make the inaugural Northeast Ride a great event. We are pleased to announce the addition of Amber Collett to our planning team! Amber has signed on as the Northeast CDC’s Event Specialist and her work over the past month has been instrumental.
The Northeast Ride will be on June 2, 2012. Starting at the Northeast Armory, the ride will take cyclists on a creative tour through the Northeast Neighborhoods, stopping for creative activities in each of the neighborhood parks. The route has been drafted and we’re working on activities for the individual parks, a post-ride expo, and a post-ride celebration. Arts Action Plan
For the past few years we’ve been helping forward the Arts Action Plan. We’ve been meeting regularly with the board of the Northeast Minneapolis Chamber and the Northeast Minneapolis Arts Association to collaborate on projects. This is the first time in history all three organizations have directors working to benefit Northeast! We’re excited and hope that our mutual, aligned efforts are able to push forward progress that helps both businesses and residents in the area. As part of the CDC’s work, we’ve taken over updating the Northeast Minneapolis Arts District website. If you’re looking for something to do in the area – check out the regularly updated calendar of events. We’ll be making a larger site update later in the year.

Jackson Street Artist Housing
Finally… I’ve really saved the best news for last. Our partnership with Artspace on the Jac Flats housing project has been going well. We had a meeting at the end of last year with Logan Park Neighborhood Association to talk about long term planning, building design, and our tax credits application process.
We also recently received some fantastic news from the city. The project has been recommended by the City’s Community Development Committee to receive additional tax credits and trust fund from the City of Minneapolis. With these funds, our recent application submitted to the State of Minnesota will require only a small amount of additional tax credits – a fact that makes us competitive and hopeful that we will be be awarded final credits in April. If all goes well, we will have a shot at getting Jac Flats under construction by the end of the year!
Thank you, thank you, thank you for your continued support. The past two years for the organization have marked a big transition, as we reshape our services to reflect the changing needs of the Northeast Community. We’re coming out of the change stronger and even more excited – not just about our own future, but about how we’re helping shape a vibrant, stronger Northeast!
