Northeast Calendar Category 3: Beltrami

View The Northeast Minneapolis Neighborhoods in a larger map

The neighborhood of Beltrami is a unique community. Large tracts of industrial land cover the southwestern portion of Beltrami, while most of the land is residential. Beltrami neighborhood and park are named after Giacomo Constantino Beltrami, an early 19th century Italian jurist, scholar and explorer. As with other neighborhoods in northeast Minneapolis, many artists have set up studios in Beltrami.

Last year’s winning Beltrami image was “The Postcard Shot” by Bjorn Christianson. What’s it going to be for 2013?

Organized by the Northeast CDC, the Northeast Calendar was created to celebrate the Northeast neighborhoods and the artists, artwork, and creative communities therein.

The deadline for submitting images to the 2013 Northeast Calendar is July 15, 2012. Participation is free, and the submission form can be found at:

Category 2 – Audubon Park

The Audubon Park neighborhood is full of gems. Home to the annual Johnstock festival, Audubon is a mix of destination and opportunity. In other words, there are lots of cool reasons to go there already, and there will be even more great activity as the area grows! The Hollywood Theater is one such opportunity, and it will be exciting to see what happens as this site is redeveloped.

Last year’s winning Audubon submission was “Deming Heights Park” by Amy Conger:

2013 Northeast Calendar – Category 1 – The Cover!

Northeast Calendar CoverWe had a lot of fun planning the 2012 Northeast Calendar Contest – and we’re really looking forward to 2013.

For the next two weeks I’m going to recap the categories for the contest, and walk us through a few neighborhood resources while we’re at it.

Category 1 – The Cover!

The cover image can be associated with any Northeast Neighborhood or Northeast in general.

Last year’s cover featured artwork by Lauri Svedberg. It was the submission that received the most votes overall. This year to simplify things we have a category just for the cover.
The winning cover artist will receive $200 and a 25 copies of the Northeast Calendar. The submission form can be found at:

Next we’ll take a look at all the different neighborhood categories. Stay tuned!

Deadline Extended!

Since we’ve got two extra categories and a whole new giant neighborhood to get the word out to, we’ve decided to extend the deadline to JULY 15th, 2012.

Please help us get the word out by sharing the following info:

2012 Northeast Calendar

The 2013 Northeast Calendar!

2012 Northeast Calendar

last year's awesome calendar

We are excited to announce that submissions are now being accepted for the 2013 Northeast Calendar!

A few key things to note about this year’s edition:

  • We’re growing the calendar and accepting for 15 categories instead of 13 like last year! Why?
  • We’ve created a category just for the cover…
  • The calendar will be larger – 14 months instead of 12 so there are overlapping years…
  • Because this way, each Northeast Neighborhood has their very own page in the calendar and oh…
  • Did we mention there’s now a 14th Northeast neighborhood???

That’s right – We’re excited to introduce Mid-City Industrial to our list of Northeast neighborhoods! The neighborhood of Mid-City Industrial was made official last year.

If you want to explore the neighborhoods, we’ve updated our maps page with a little description of each one, as well as some helpful links.

Once again, there are no submission fees for artist entries. Winners will be decided by an open voting process. The winners for each month will receive $50 and free calendars, and the cover artist will win $200!

So please check out the submission guidelines here:

Feeling nostalgic or looking for inspiration? The entries for the 2012 calendar can still be seen here:

and when you’re ready, you can submit images here!

Good luck!

The Northeast Calendars Are In!

June - Bjorn Christianson

The calendars are in – and they look great! Thank you again to the artists who participated in the project, and the sponsors for helping us make printing the calendars possible.

Here you see two calendars on display in their native environment – a Northeast Minneapolis residence.

You too can adopt a Northeast Calendar! Calendars will be available at select Northeast distributors and events in early November, but the easiest and fastest way to receive your Northeast Calendar is to order online. For more information visit

Northeast Calendar – to be designed by Kevin Cannon!

We are proud to announce that the first annual Northeast Calender will be designed by local artist Kevin Cannon!

Recently voted “Minneapolis’ Best Cartoonist” by the City Pages, Kevin Cannon is also an award winning illustrator and exceptionally talented designer. He led the design for the recent “Just Add Ink” project and spearheads the increasingly popular Nordeast Comics Summit.

Northeast Calendar Preview

We  love that Kevin’s adding his own artistic touch to the calendar with the illustrated neighborhood scenes you see at the bottom. How awesome is that?

Local businesses and neighborhood organizations are making the calendar possible by purchasing ad spaces (the two grey boxes to the left.) There are still a few spaces left, so if you’re interested in sponsoring, please check out the sponsorship info page or email me for more information: (replace -at- with @).

I’m super proud and excited to announce the winners of the first annual Northeast Calendar Contest.
