We’re happy to announce that local cartoonist Kevin Cannon is designing the ride map again this year for the third year in a row! One of the perks of participating in the NE Ride is getting to take home one of these delightful maps for yourself. CALLING ALL VOLUNTEERS!
Want to help out with the NE Ride this year? Come and be a part of our team–we need YOU to help make the NE Ride a success again! We need volunteers to help with set-up, registration and check-in, leading the groups of riders, assisting at the stops, photography, clean-up, and other miscellaneous jobs. Your help would be greatly appreciated.
Fill out and submit the Volunteer Form if you know how you’d like to help and we’ll get back to you ASAP.

We wanted to thank all of you for your support of the first annual Northeast Ride and let you know how the event turned out! Thank you to our planning committee, volunteers, sponsors, and riders –we couldn’t have had such a great event with out you! THANK YOU!!
All of a sudden, summer has arrived! And with it, lots of fun & updates for you from the Northeast CDC.
Our first annual Northeast Ride was a smashing success, with over 250 registered riders touring through Northeast. Many thanks to the 50+ volunteers that helped register riders, facilitate the stops, and plan this event. I also want to sincerely thank the ride sponsors (over 40 different businesses and organizations!) You helped make this inaugural ride an incredible showcase for the Northeast community. I know it takes a certain degree of risk to support a first-time event, and we’re so grateful you saw the potential and helped make this vision come to fruition. Thank you!

Speaking of new projects, the 2012 Northeast Calendar has been a big hit, and our plan is to make the 2013 Calendar even better. In fact, we are excited to announce that artwork submissions are now being accepted! A few key things to note about next year’s edition: The calendar will be larger – 14 months instead of 12. This way, each Northeast Neighborhood has their very own page in the calendar. Oh… and did we mention there’s now a 14th Northeast neighborhood??? That’s right – we’re excited to welcome Mid-City Industrial as a now-official Northeast neighborhood! Mid-City Industrial became an official neighborhood last year, and we’re excited to welcome them to the calendar too. Are you interested in participating in the Calendar project as either an artist or a sponsor (or both?) On April 12, along with the Northeast Chamber and Clay Squared to Infinity, we hosted the first of several “State of the Arts Districts” forums. We had a dialogue with community members and artists about opportunities for marketing and how to bring guests to the Arts District. We also discussed how to leverage the brand of the district to bring people to the area. Speaking of branding: we also updated the Arts District website with a shiny new updated, mobile-friendly, share-able version! You can check it out at: northeastminneapolisartsdistrict.com
Jackson Street Artist Housing
In other news, things are moving along well with JacFlats. The Minnesota Housing Board supported full funding of our supplemental LIHTC request for JacFlats, which secures the current credit need for the project. In other words: things are looking promising as we work with our partners at Artspace for a summer closing! Our continued thanks goes to Artspace for their partnership on this project, and their leadership in making this community vision a reality.
While updates and emails are great, we’d love to see you in person, too! Next week we’ll be at the Northeast Farmers Market nonprofit booth hosting a plant swap. Swap or donate anything related to plants: seedlings, splits, seeds, containers, indoor plants, gardening tools, books, and other supplies. We’ll be there Saturday June 16 from 9am-1pm. It’s an exciting and busy time at the Northeast CDC as we launch new programs and meet the needs of the ever-evolving and ever-vibrant Northeast community. Hey Northeast Riders!
The first annual Northeast Ride is less than a week away! We hope everyone has their calendars marked for Saturday, June 2nd from 10am-2pm to participate in the Northeast Ride, but be sure to pre-register as well so you don’t have to wait in along-line on ride day.
Ride Time: 10am-2pm
Day: Saturday, June 2nd
First, check out our artistic route map created by award-winning local artist, Kevin Cannon!
If you’re planning to use a mobile device to navigate, we also have an online Northeast Ride map that includes the route, interactive stop locations, and points of interest in the community.
The Northeast Ride is happening rain or shine, so be sure to plan accordingly and dress for the weather. If we do have rain, check-in will be inside the Northeast Armory building, but we’ll have volunteers and/or signs to show you the way!
* Check-in begins at 10am at the Northeast Armory, across the street from Beltrami Park.
* Please bring a photo ID
* At check-in, you’ll be given a brochure map of the Northeast Ride route and your Northeast Ride t-shirt! Enjoy a cup of Peace Coffee while you get ready to hit the road
Don’t forget to bring your…
* Water bottle — stay hydrated, folks!
* Bike & Bike Lock (if you need a bike, you can rent a Nice Ride at a nearby station!)
* Backpack or bag you feel comfortable wearing while bicycling
* Sunscreen or Poncho
* Cash/card if you plan to make additional purchases or stops along
* Everyone is invited to a Northeast Ride Wrap Party, hosted by Altered Esthetics, from 2-5pm.
* There will be larger prints of the Northeast Ride route map for sale & a variety of beverages. Note: If you plan to drink alcoholic beverages, please have your photo ID handy! 🙂

The Lions Club of Northeast Minneapolis a ride sponsor this year. The NE Lions Club was founded in 1940, and serves both Northeast Minneapolis and St. Anthony Village. NE Lions is a member of Lions International, a coalition of 44,000 other secular service clubs.
NE Lions does ongoing service projects like running Meals on Wheels, and they also help raise money for various causes, like helping families who have gone through serious hardships, or funding a Lions Scholarship Foundation.
Some of the NE Lions’ specific projects include participating in Lions International’s goal of planting one million trees. They also do ongoing charitable gambling at locations around Northeast. If you’re interested in becoming a Lion, join them on a volunteer project and then contact them for an inquiry about membership. Thanks to the Lions for supporting the ride!
Another sponsor for the Northeast Ride is Northeast Bank. Northeast Bank has been a part of the Northeast community for over sixty years and we’re excited to have them involved!
Northeast Bank works with the community through donations like they have provided to the ride, but they also support the community through their regular banking operations. They have a commitment to community reinvestment and a history of helping extend credit in order to serve community needs.
